I just came back from a 5 day backpacking trip at Mt. Rogers in Virginia. I purchased the Goal Zero Nomad 7 about a month ago to charge my iPhone and Petzl Tikka 2 with a Petzl Core Rechargeable Battery. I left the battery pack at home, hoping we'd have clear skies. Otherwise, I figured I would be able to use the iPhone for photos, video and GPS tracking. We had 4 days of perfectly clear skies and the Goal Zero Nomad 7 charged my iPhone from typically 16% charge to 100% charge within 2 hours without any issues. However if a cloud rolled in and blocked the sun, I would have to reconnect the solar panel to begin the charge again. On the one day that it was cloudy I wasn't able to charge my iPhone, but the Petzl Core Rechargeable Battery charged perfectly, even after the sun had set below the mountain range... which really impressed me. I took my iPhone on my backpacking trip so I could use a GPS tracking app, the phone and video features. The GPS app, really sucked the battery dry, so I typically charged my iPhone about twice a day... once in the morning and once in the afternoon, between day hikes to summits.

Faint Fuzzies

Journal Entry Date: Sun, Apr 24th, 2011

It's been awhile since my last journal post... I just haven't had much time to take out the telescope and what little time I've had lately, I've spent out in the woods backpacking or riding my bike. But... last night was so clear, and the temperature outside was so nice that I just had to get out the scope and see what I could see.

It was nice to assemble my telescope and see that it didn't require any adjustments after sitting boxed up for the past few months. Once the sun set I aligned the mount/scope and began my tour of the night skies. I was feeling lazy so I let my hand controller do all the work and just started hitting the visible objects it suggested one-after-another.

I got to see lots of faint fuzzies that I haven't seen before and I had my first opportunity to see the sombrero galaxy galaxy through my telescope. I also saw the whirlpool galaxy and the sunflower galaxy through my telescope for the first time as well. It was a really good night to have the scope out and I wish I had taken the time to mount my camera and snap a few shots to capture the moment and the objects I was able to see.
